The department of Microbiology organized a CME on “ANTIMICROBIAL STEWARDSHIP PROGRAM – A PRIMER” during the World Antimicrobial Awareness Week (18 – 24 November 2021).

Following were the deliberations of the CME:

The scientific session was initiated by Dr Vijay Natarajan, wherein the paramount importance of role played by the clinicians towards rational use of antibiotics was reinforced. Dr Piyush Chaudhari carried forward the session, and discussed case-based scenarios for outlining the approach of antimicrobial usage in various clinical settings, thereby highlighting the importance of understanding and incorporating antimicrobial stewardship program in management of infectious diseases. Dr. Vikram Padbidri educated the audience about the importance of generation of antibiograms in a clinical set-up, and its role in formulating hospital antibiotic policy. He exhorted the microbiologists to actively participate in individual patient antimicrobial treatment planning as well as for participating in hospital infection control program. A presentation on BD MaxTM System was made by Dr. Anil Nafaria from BD Diagnostics. In the end, Dr. Vijaya Sagar, Dean SMCW summed the salient points of the day’s scientific session, and appreciated the efforts of the speakers toward conveying the importance of antimicrobial stewardship to the audience. The CME was attended by HODs, Faculty of various departments, Nursing staff of SMCW & SUHRC. A total of around 110 delegates attended the CME.
