Elective programs play a vital role in global medical education by offering flexible, practical, and international clinical exposure. The Symbiosis Medical Elective Program (SMEP) provides female international medical students a structured elective experience at Symbiosis Medical College for Women (SMCW) and Symbiosis University Hospital and Research Centre (SUHRC), in alignment with National Medical Commission (NMC) guidelines.

The program integrates clinical training, academic learning, research, field exposure, and cultural immersion, enabling a comprehensive understanding of Indian and global healthcare systems in a 900+ bed tertiary care setting.

Overview:
  • The Symbiosis Medical Electives Program (SMEP) at SIU is exclusively designed for female international medical students in the 3rd year or beyond of a 5-year undergraduate medical program, with prior clinical exposure or equivalent experience.
  • The duration of the SMEP may be 4, 6, or 8 weeks, or customised as per individual requirements, subject to schedule availability, and participation requires obtaining the necessary approvals from Indian authorities.
  • Have basic proficiency in English which will be the primary language of instruction.
  • Applicants are required to submit Form NMC-10 (3 copies with photographs), a Letter of Recommendation from the academic head confirming eligibility, valid passport copies (with at least 6 months validity), and a signed letter of undertaking . Students will have to adhere to the campus code of discipline (statutory as per SIU).
  • Applicants are required to maintain a medical elective logbook to document clinical learning, skills, and experiences, which will be used for assessment and feedback.

Please note: The enquiry must be submitted at least six (6) months prior to the intended start date of the elective which enables to complete all formalities and paperwork in time.

Fees:

APPLICATION FEE (Non refundable) - US$ 100 (ONE HUNDRED US DOLLAR) + 18% TAXES (This is as per the instructions by National Medical Commission (NMC) of India)

2 Application Review Your application will be reviewed based on availability, department capacity, and academic schedule. Decision shared within 2 weeks.
3 Provisional Acceptance & Application Fee If selected, you will receive a Provisional Acceptance Email (valid for 1 week). Pay the application fee to NMC & submit Form NMC-10 , required documents, and payment proof. (Not applicable for OCI/ Indian students abroad where specified) Submit within 2 weeks of acceptance.
4 Government Approval Process Your application is processed for approvals from relevant authorities. Ensure all documents and fees are complete to avoid delays. It takes approximately 3–4 months.
5 Final Confirmation & Programme Fee On receiving approval, confirm your participation and pay the programme fee (based on elective duration). Submit proof of payment. Payment required within 1 week of approval email.
6 Pre-Arrival Planning Share your travel itinerary. Your elective schedule (clinical + non-medical components) will be finalised based on your preferences. Share details immediately after fee payment.
7 Student Support Accommodation (twin-sharing) on campus, meals, orientation, visa/FRRO guidance, and cultural engagement activities. Coordinated prior to arrival.
8 Programme & Completion Begin with orientation. Attend weekday clinical rotations and non-medical exposure (minimum 4 days per cycle). Provide feedback and complete assessments. Receive a Certificate of Completion at the end. Programme runs as per selected duration; weekends are free.
