Psychiatry is the branch of medicine focused on the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of mental, emotional and behavioural disorders. Department of Psychiatry consists of a team of psychiatrists, psychiatric social workers and clinical psychologist.

  • The Department of Psychiatry at Symbiosis Medical College for Women (SMCW) will be preeminent in teaching, research and clinical care for the community.
Mission
  • To reach the community with initiatives like “Community awareness activities” and “Psychoeducation about common psychiatry disorders”.
  • To provide services through specialty clinics like child guidance clinic, deaddiction clinic etc. and rehabilitation services.
  • Improving people’s mental health and welfare, overcome barriers and disadvantages that result from mental illnesses and support individuals in leading peaceful and satisfying lives.

Name:- Col (Dr) Harpreet Singh
MBBS MD (Psychiatry)

Dr. Harpreet Singh has graduated and done his post-graduation from Armed Forces Medical College, Pune.

Experience:

He has about 35 years of clinical experience in the armed forces including 28 years as a psychiatrist. He has 26 years of teaching experience in different armed Forces institutions including 7 years as Associate Professor and then Professor at AFMC, Pune. He is a recognized post-graduate teacher and examiner in Psychiatry at MUHS, Nasik.

Achievements:

He stood first in MD Psychiatry examination in Pune University. He was awarded the GOC in C commendation for meritorious service in armed forces in 2014. He was Direct Council member of the Indian Psychiatric Society from 2017 to 2020.

Publications:

He has 14 publications in various national and international indexed journals. He has contributed to a ‘’Competency Based Textbook for Undergraduate Students’’ published by AFMC Pune

Presentations:

He has been regularly presenting papers at various national conferences in India and has chaired sessions at national conferences. He has delivered guest lectures and conducted symposiums at conferences and other forums.

Outreach Programs:

He has conducted many community outreach programs including heading a community based suicide prevention program for troops and their families in Northern Command of Armed Forces and a community based brief intervention program for hazardous drinking in armed forces.

Areas of interest:

Areas of interest include Stress Related Disorders including PTSD, Behavioural addictions and co-morbidity in Alcohol Dependence Syndrome.

Infrastructure facilities


  • Department- Professor room, Associate Professor room, Assistant Professor room, Departmental Library, Department Office.

The Department of Psychiatry is spacious with adequate rooms available for all faculties. Each room is well furnished along with a desktop and internet facility.

  • OPD- Outpatient area is a spacious, isolated area built taking into consideration least surrounding disturbance required in treating patients with various psychological issues. Here, you will find informative posters and a TV displayed to educate the general population regarding various psychiatric disorders. In addition, Electroencephalograph (EEG), Biofeedback and Psychometric testing are some of the facilities available along with consultation of patients in the OPD.
  • Ward- Separate male and female wards, total 8 beds, nursing station, doctors room, clinic room, pantry room and separate male and female toilets.
  • Library: The departmental library is well lit, calm and quiet place to quench your thirst for knowledge. It consists of a total of 80 books, National and International journals on various topics in Psychiatry.
  • Demonstration rooms: The demonstration rooms are well-equipped with audio-visual aids and infrastructure which give the best learning experience to students.
