Vision & Mission

The Pharmacology is a Para-clinical subject taught during second year of M.B.B.S course. The Department is situated on the 4th floor of the Symbiosis Medical College for Women at the Lavale Hill-base Campus.

We believe that a good physician has to be a good pharmacologist too. Our goal is to make capable Indian medical graduates; we all strive for it.

The Department is committed to train undergraduate, postgraduate students and impart knowledge about:

  1. General principles of drug action and handling of drugs by the body.
  2. Choose and prescribe suitable drugs according as per the needs of the patient to prevent, diagnose and treat common ailments.
  3. Anticipate, recognise, avert and manage adverse drug effects.
  4. Avoid concurrent use of drugs leading to harmful drug interactions.
  5. Judiciously use rational drug combinations in the best interest of the patient.
  6. Understand the involvement of both drug and non-drug influences in the result of treatment.
  7. Thoughtfully use “over the counter” drugs and be mindful of ill effects of social use of intoxicants.
  8. Know about the essential drug concept and render it in terms of drug requirements for a given community.
  9. Maintain thoughtfulness in prescribing drugs expected to cause dependence and be cognizant of the treatment approaches for drug dependence.
  10. Implement the drug treatment guidelines laid prescribed for diseases covered under National Health Programmes.
  11. Know, expect and avoid probable adverse effects of drugs on the foetus while treating pregnant woman.
  12. Comprehend the age related factors while prescribing medicines in infants, children and geriatric patients.
  13. Know about the diverse categories of bio-medical waste, their possible hazards and their management.
  14. Update the new drugs which have been approved for marketing.
  Vision

To prepare and train undergraduate students in rational drug prescribing in agreement to patients’ requirement for treatment, prevention and diagnosis of common diseases with importance, also on Adverse Drug Reaction (ADR’s), pharmacovigilance and drug prescription in children, elderly and pregnancy.

In this era of globalization, India is emerging as a hub for clinical research and drug trials. Therefore, we plan to establish well equipped Clinical Pharmacology Unit to carry out Phase I studies, Phase II and III studies.

  • Bioavailability and bioequivalence study unit that can house 24 volunteers as per D.C.G.I. requirements.
  • Collaboration with other institutes/ industries, to facilitate clinical research on various drugs.
Mission
  • Prepare the students with adequate knowledge for rational drug prescription
  • Equip the students to spot, assess, prevent and treat adverse drug reactions
  • Enable the students to appreciate the essential and orphan drug concepts and their implication in the community
  • To stress the significance of Pharmacoeconomics
  • To generate cognizance regarding the harmful actions of drugs in pregnancy, children and elderly among them
  • To gain skill in pharmacotherapeutics
  • To train them about correct prescription writing and its medico-legal importance
  • To orient students for research & developments.
  • To inculcate and encourage research aptitude in undergraduate students and helps them to undertake short term studentship research projects.
